# Design a Discord role icon

> Make a 64x64 role icon that stays legible at the ~20px Discord actually renders it at, and export it under the 256KB cap.

A Discord role icon is uploaded at **64x64** and capped at **256KB**, but it is
displayed beside a username at roughly **20 pixels**. Most role icons are
designed at the size of the upload dialog and fall apart at the size people
actually see. The role icon tool previews 64, 32, 20 and 16px simultaneously so
the smallest one is the one you judge.

Role icons require **boost level 2** on the server before they can be used at all.

## How to make one

1. Open the **Icons** tab.
2. Pick a glyph from the library on the left. There are 5013 of them
   across 14 categories, searchable by name and by tag.
   The set merges Lucide and Tabler, both drawn on the same 24x24 grid with a
   2px stroke, so they mix without looking like two libraries, plus solid brand
   logos under a `logo-` prefix for platforms, games and socials.
3. Choose a background shape. There are 22: circle, squircle,
   rounded square, hexagon, shield, seal, ticket, banner and more.
4. Set the fill - solid, linear gradient, radial gradient, or none - plus an
   optional inset ring, shadow, glow and grain.
5. Check the size ladder under the preview. If the mark is unreadable at 20px,
   simplify it: fewer strokes, heavier weight, higher contrast against the
   background.
6. Export. The PNG's real weight is reported against Discord's 256KB limit
   before you download it.

## Presets

15 preset styles (Tile, Coin, Neon ring, Neon glyph, Halo,
Shield, Hex, Chip, Medal, Seal, Ticket, Outline, Type and others) can be applied
in one click and then adjusted. 12 preset hues and
10 curated palettes recolour a design without changing its shape.

## Text mode

A role icon can be type instead of a glyph, or both together. Six typefaces are
available for the artwork, and the plate is measured before it is drawn so the
text cannot overflow the shape.
